Cherries, Polyphenols & Your Microbiome

Cherries, Polyphenols & Your Microbiome
1:01

cherries

Cherries are packed with nutrition  and anthocyanin pigments. Anthocyanins are a type of polyphenol compound which gives foods their red, purple, or blue colors. Cherries are a rich source of vitamin C which have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, comparable to those of certain pain-relieving medications.

This bright red fruit greatly benefits our microbiome because of its high fiber content. One cup could provide more than 10 percent of our recommended daily fiber intake. Considering our gut bacteria thrive on fiber, cherries provide an abundant source of phytonutrients providing a powerful antioxidant boost. All of which help reduce inflammation and gut dysbiosis, contributing to a happy gut.

Add them to yogurt, pancakes, granola and oats. I like that they can be a great grab and go snack.

While you are exploring local farmers markets in your area, try and find the bright red, blue and purple varieties which will give you some of the benefits mentioned above.
