Polyphenols are phytochemicals naturally found in plants or foods that often give them a particular taste or color. Polyphenols also help reduce inflammation in the body.

Some rich sources of polyphenols to incorporate in your diet include;

  • Black Tea -  Is abundant in polyphenols. The primary polyphenols in black tea are called flavonoids. Flavonoids are known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects as well as neutralizing free radicals in the body.
  • Dark Chocolate - Cocoa is rich in polyphenols. It is an antioxidant and a prebiotic. Consuming small amounts may lead to an increase in bioactive nitric oxide, also known as 'NO' which has shown to lower blood pressure.
  • Coffee - Supplies high amounts of polyphenols. The polyphenols in coffee are called phenolic acids. Of which, 2 of the most noteworthy are called chlorogenic acid and caffeic acid. These compounds may help alleviate inflammation in the body.
  • Olives and Extra Virgin Olive Oil - Contain high level of polyphenols and are a great source of healthy fats. Olive oil particularly has anti-inflammatory properties and helps with cholesterol synthesis.
  • Fruits and Vegetables - The darker and more vibrant the colour - the higher it's polyphenol content. Strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, elderberries, apples, grapes, peaches, cherries, broccoli, carrots, lettuce, are some examples of polyphenol and antioxidant rich fruits and vegetables.
