There are 5 common ingredients to avoid in personal care and home cleaning products,
- Parabens - A type of preservative. Shampoos, hair dyes, tanning sprays, sunscreen and deodorants.
- Phthalates - Are plastic bi-products found in cosmetics, soaps, perfumes, hair spray, nail polish, detergents and household items that can give off gasses. Plastic shower curtains and toilet paper.
- Synthetic fragrances - Mostly derived from petroleum. Perfumes, body scents, detergents, fabric softeners, dryer sheets, soaps, shampoo, conditioner, air fresheners and scented candles.
- Triclosan - Began as an antibacterial agent used only in hospitals.
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate/SLS - Emulsifier or foaming agents found in shampoo, soap and toothpaste.
Here are a couple of ideas on do-It yourself cleaning products
You can make your own cleaning supplies to avoid toxic chemicals often found in store-bought products. It’s simple, easy, and may save you a few bucks, too.
All-Purpose Cleaner
This simple solution can be used on most surfaces.
- Mix a solution of 1⁄2 water and 1⁄2 white vinegar in a spray bottle.
- Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil. I like to use lavender, lemon and tea tree.
- Use as you would any other spray cleaner, without the toxic chemicals!
A Natural Scrubber
This natural scrubbing solution will help cut through grime and soak up odor.
-
Mix a few tablespoons of baking soda with a cup of water or just apply baking soda directly on the surface you want to scrub.
-
Apply a generous amount to the area that needs to be cleaned.
-
Leave paste on for 15 minutes before scrubbing off with a scrub brush.
